Studio Electronics

Operational controls

Threshold sets the point at which gain reduction commences, controls the signal level entering the side-chain and not the input level.

Ratio is variable between 1:1 and 20:1

Attack is variable between 50uS to 5mS, controls the speed at which the compressor responds to a rise in input signal level. A slow attack time will allow transient peaks to escape compression.

Release 50mS to 5Sec, is the time taken for the compressor to recover from gain reduction. Programme signals are complex, so a complex release characteristic is required for optimum results. Fast transients require a fast release time to avoid over limiting effects, whereas normal programme material should be user adjustable. In addition to compressor contains circuits which prevent partial recovery between waveform peaks, thus eliminating low frequency distortion when using fast release times.

Blend With the ability to do in-module parallel mixing of the dry signal and the compressed signal, the engineer can now enjoy the parallel or “side chaining” of an instrument with itself and come up with the perfect blend of the original and compressed signal without the problems associated with in-the-box latency.

Output Gain -20dB to +20dB – to make up signal level which is lost during compression.

Bypass switch is a hard bypass of the compressor.

FF/FB switch In addition to the Input/Compressor Blend knob, the D 910 has many other unique features: The ability of being able to switch between Feed Back and Feed Forward compression. This feature gives the engineer the freedom to combine the smooth nature of the Feed Back type of compression with the agressive effect of Feed Forward compression.

Side chain listen switch (option) for monitoring any eq or other effect which may be applied to the side-chain.

Peak limiter switch (option) A separate switchable peak limiter, connected after the output gain control, complements the operation of the compressor section by allowing slow attack times and/or gentle compression slopes to be used, whilst giving complete protection from overload. The limiter has an adjustable internally preset threshold, fast attack (50uS), automatic programme related release and a ratio of 50:1. Gain reduction from limiting is indicated on the display along with compression, and in addiction a LED indicates the onset of limiting.

Stereo link switch on the master compressor and a LED on the slave unit couples the control circuits of both compressors to prevent image shifting when treating stereo material on a final mix. The peak limiters can be used on top but they remain independent, only limiting the peaks on the signal in the channel where they appear. Operational controls should be set the same on both channels when linked.
